Planting Trees and Shrubs

By Kurt On January 3, 2009 Under Trees and Shrubs

When Tree’s and Shrubs are planted and cared for properly, they will maintain a vigorous Healthy Life. Not only do they bring satisfaction to you, a well maintained landscape will add value to your home.

To avoid spending money needlessly and to have success with your lawn and landscape, simple steps can be taken. One of the first steps is when choosing your shrubs is to make sure they are adaptable to the location where they are going to be planted at.

Remember Light conditions, Soil Conditions, Plant Requirements, are some of the things you need to know when picking them out.

A Tree or Shrub’s health can depend upon the grower, so it is good to have a reparable garden center or nursery that you purchase them from. Planting Trees and Shrubs correctly is a Big Step in helping them live a Healthy Life. It is important to have a good foundation for overall growth. Proper planting gives the  roots a good chance for obtaining water and nutrients they need. Correct installation can avoid problems down the road. Many times they wind up dying, which could have been avoided.

Proper Tree and Shrub Care:

Improper Watering can determine the out come of plants. Over Watering or Under Watering are equally as bad. Too much water causes most plants to have Root Problems such as a fungus which causes the root system to rot. Under Watering causes stress and denies them of the water they need.

That is why it is important to have an Irrigation system that is adjusted correctly and is working. Often sprinkler heads are broken and need to be replaced and shrubs are not getting any water, only during rain. This is not good especially during a drought season in the summer time. If the landscape doe’s not have a sprinkler system, then the water them with a hose by hand.

All plants, trees and shrubs, do need basic nutrients. Some require more than just the essential elements. That is why it is important to know what each plant type needs are to remain healthy. Plants get their food from the soil or from fertilizer applied to them by either liquid or granular form.

Most established shrubs need fertilization two times a year. Once in the spring and once in the fall. A general fertilizer such a 6-6-6 or 8-10-10, can be used. Plants such as acid-loving, require food specifically for them. “For newly planted shrubs, apply a granular fertilizer after 30-day’s from when installed”.

Young tree’s need to fertilized up until the point they become large enough to where they will get nutrients needed from the soil. Trees that have been established for a few years get enough from the fertilization the lawn receives.

Trees and shrubs need to be pruned and trimmed for their appearance and overall health. Shrubs that become overgrown can become a cluttered mess. They become an eyesore and ruin the appearance of your home. Plus, once they get out of hand, they now require a lot of work. Either by you or by hiring someone else to do it.

If maintained on a steady basis, you won’t have the problem. With the proper equipment, one can prune most shrubs on their own.

I remember growing up as a child and helping my parents trim the hedges on Saturday. Then barbeque hamburgers at the end of the day. Working in the yard as a family can be fun and rewarding. I encourage everyone to get outside and work together. Plan a pruning day.

Trees need to be pruned for shape and from keeping them from damaging tour home. If they are causing problems they need to taken care of even if it’s a neighbor’s home that could become damaged. Some trees can be trimmed by yourself with the proper tools and techniques. However, It is recommended to hire a certified arborist to make sure it is done correctly. You don’t want to harm the or kill the tree. Always use safety when operating any equipment.
